ENVIRONMENTAL NARRATIVES

THE BOUNTY WORKSHOP

We’ve been busy all year long gathering art through our Artist in Residence program along with unique goods from far and wide. We’ve enjoyed seeing each artist create in our space and share their craft with us and those of you who’ve experienced them in their studio here at The Bounty. Every artist that occupies the space is my new favorite artist always adding to my awe of the creative process. Through casual conversations about their art is where they pass the most profound life lessons along. I’ve learned to listen to them discuss clay, ink, wood, dyes, pigments, semi-precious stones and yarn tension learning the whole way not just about these details but about them as artists and people. It’s what I enjoy the most about their residencies.

We’re celebrating them with some of their goods filling our Bounty Workshop. These along with other complimentary vintage pieces fill our front window with color, sparkle and joy.

THE SPECTACLE OF SPORT

“Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but, in the hours, weeks, months, years they spend preparing for it.” - Alan Armstrong

Loosely based on the 1989 book by Richard Martin and Harold Koda, Jock and Nerds: Men’s Style in the Twentieth Century, this narrative is as the authors note, “is neither a sociological treatise nor a fashion manual. Instead it is a proposition about the way men(and women) dressed in the twentieth century. Men(and Women) are knowing in making choices among styles options, and they dress to create or recreate social roles.”

Fandom can be heard echoing through the autumn crisp air as home team rivalries face off on pitches, courts, fieldhouses and courses. Passion can be seen on the faces and the chests of these devotees.

TIME OUT

Wind in a sail is like a high brassy note of a trumpet. Sailing and Jazz, a perfect summer pairing.

Inspired by the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival famously documented by Bert Stern in Jazz on a Summers Day, our narrative kicks off one of the best seasons here in the Madison area.

Find a friend who has a boat and get out on the water or paddle up to the Memorial Union and soak in some sun, suds and sounds.

QUEERING TRADITIONS

The intersection of queerness and plaid: a historical informed cultural symbol.

Brief history: Scotland, US heritage brand/symbolism, Queen Victoria x tartan

Olive, our intern for the summer, is a sophomore from Middleton, WI pursuing a degree in Textile and Fashion Design with a certificate in Mathematics. With a background in fiber arts and freelance commissions, their work plays with texture and the idea of “more is more”.

MIDCENTURY PRAIRIE

Ms. O’keeffe was born on a farm near Sun Prairie, WI and spent her early years in the area attending Sacred Heart Academy, now Edgewood High School and Central High School in Madison. It’s with this note, our Midcentury Prairie Narrative took shape. It evolves with each reset but stays true to Midcentury inspired furniture and decor with a strong O’Keeffe influence.

"I had to create an equivalent for what I felt about what I was looking at—not copy it." - Georgia O’Keeffe

BLOOM CORP

Bloom - a state or time of beauty, freshness, and vigor.

Corps - a body of people engaged in a particular activity.

As the season changes so does the landscape around us. Bloom Corps captures this visually with a strong palette of greens which act as a base to the emerging color that’s reflected by the bloom of croquis, daffodil, red bud, and lilac.

As this seasonal color evolves, so does the narrative. Tashi Koi, Botanical Artist of Mod Nomad, uses this platform to create harmonious arrangements which symbolically capture this flora evolution.

MIDDLE WESTERN

1960’s cinema captured some dramatic performances and marked by a coming of age story. HUD gave us a gritty Paul Newman and Peter Bogdanovich reflects us coming of age. However, it was Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain that flipped the script.

“You have another little drink and I'll have another little drink. Then maybe we can work up some real family feeling here.”

“It’s not what a man knows, it’s what he fears.”

“I wish I knew how to quit you.”

SUMMIT SKI CLUB

Inspired by 1960’s snow covered chalets and cozy ski lodges, our Summit Ski Club brings our family together for a winter getaway. We’ve got your covered with ski jackets, vests and alpine sweaters.

If you can image yourself in Ray-ban Glacier, Downhill Racer inspired ski sweaters, brightly-hued vests and beanies, then this narrative is for you.

Slim Aarons’ shutter speed would be set to slow and easy to capture this crew.

PREWAY PLAID

Tartan originated in the Highlands of Scotland in the 1600’s. People in clans used natural resources to dye the wool including plants and berries. Each different type of tartan would represent a clan from each geographical area. There are believed to be over 5000 tartans in existence and the number is increasing at the rate of about 135 per year. It was in the early 19th century when a handful of tartans mushroomed into thousands for clan, district and fashion tartans available today.

We’re mad for plaid with this narrative. Blackwatch, Royal Stewart, Buchannon, Graham, Maccinnes, MacDonald, Sutherland. Does your family have a tartan? If so, see if it’s on the patchwork wall we’ve created or in one of the garments we’ve collected.

PREWAY PINK

Did you know over 300K new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and men. This part of over 1.9M new cases of cancers that will occur this year. Add to that, the families impacted by cancer make the numbers even more staggering. We wanted to help in whatever way we could. Gilda’s Club Madison just seemed to be the right fit so we created our narrative Preway Pink as a way to acknowledge and support individuals and their families impacted not just for breast cancer but ALL cancers. With the help of some eager local experts, we’ve created the only pink Preway fireplace that exists. Come see this beautiful piece of art along with some fabulous pink-hued supporting pieces. Hopefully you’ll feel compelled to own a piece of this narrative AND by helping Gilda’s Club Madison out as well. All profits will be donated to them.🩷🩷🩷
